Quantities, Symbols, Units, and Abbreviations in the Life Sciences is a reliable compilation of the most up-to-date recommendations for using units, symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms in scientific publications across the biological sciences. Drawing on the authority of the various nomenclature committees of the many international societies in the biosciences, as well as on the editors of prestigious scientific journals, and on eminent individuals active in scientific publishing, this essential reference provides authors and editors with easy access to the authoritative usage of the universally accepted terms they need for clear scientific communication. The compiled symbols, units, and abbreviations are defined, with commentary and some etymological background frequently provided. The diverse scope of disciplines treated includes biochemistry, molecular biology, medicine, genetics, immunology, and virology, plus appropriate sections on mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
Globally there has been a marked increase in both the frequency and cost of natural disasters occurring due to geological, hydrological and meteorological causes. According to the United States National Academy of Sciences losses caused by natural disasters have quadrupled in the last twenty years. This book, conceived as a technical manual deals with various aspects of geohazards - using photogeology and remote sensing. It is unique in that the succinct text supports the illustrations, and is aimed at geoscience professionals and university students, devised as a quick-reference standardized presentation of 170 globally occurring photo-geomorphological units derived from a comprehensive image-resolvable and ordered genetic classification of geounits. The selected geounits are uniquely classed and identified as either agents of, or susceptible to, one or more of the 14 general types of geohazards. The data set of each geounit systematically integrates characterizing graphics, ground- and air- perspective photos to introduce interpreted aerospace mono/stereoscopic photos and images demonstrating their detectability and mappability.
This book reveals and presents the root-causes that lead to varying improvement performances across different locations of a global positioned manufacturing organization. Conducting a multiple case study analysis of manufacturing sites around the world, the author found that the quality of the strategy deployment process is vital, especially when it is clear to all affected employees-a situation we refer to as strategy cascading. But having a sound strategy cascading alone is not enough. The author worked out that a company, which achieves to align its sound strategy cascading with the company context and leadership style of its top-management team, is likely to realize more operations improvements than do companies that missed to do so. ai
